Whitewash Cottage Ceiling

Installing ceiling boards over ceiling joists and rigid foam insulation.

Scaffolding is used to reach the higher sections.

Completed ceiling after being finished.  Ceiling is first rubbed with transparent stain to limit wood absorbency, lightly wiped with paint for whitening effect, and then lacquered for protection and shine.

Material is a mix of spruce, pine, and fir in 1×8 tongue & groove.  The overall effect is still mostly yellow, but combining the different wood species adds red and blue tones.

Trim that is finished to match the ceiling completes the job and brings the edges together in a clean line.

Fixtures installed.  Like stain, this ceiling treatment preserves the look of the wood but also adds a unique effect.
